Projectdetails

Introduction

Founded 25 years ago, our purpose, as a Europe-based NGO, is to address the root causes of forest destruction from a European perspective. The current President of the European Commission has put the protection and the restoration of forests at the top of her policy agenda. This presents huge opportunities for Fern and confirms the importance and relevance of our work in supporting the implementation of the EU’s environmental agenda.

Delivery Workplan

The three years of this proposal are in parallel with the final three years of this Commission – we therefore dub this our ‘delivery’ workplan. The imperative will be to get the European Commission to deliver on the ambitious commitments it has made, while working to ensure the European Parliament and European Council are cooperative.

Work Packages

Fern’s FPA 2022-2024 proposal contains a total of six work packages, including:

  1. Organisational development work
  2. Climate adaptation and mitigation
  3. Bioenergy – the clean energy transition
  4. Sustainable consumption
  5. Sustainable trade
  6. Illegal logging – sustainable timber

Across these work packages, over the next three years, our team of 19 staff will work to influence over three dozen policies that are key to the LIFE priorities, particularly:

  • Nature
  • Biodiversity
  • Circular Economy and Quality of Life
  • Clean Energy Transition
  • Climate Mitigation and Adaptation

Activities

Activities focus on:

  • Policy advice and advocacy
  • Facilitating access of NGOs across Europe and beyond to EU policy-making processes
  • Research, media, and communications

Fern has four offices, and our Brussels office contains a Forest Desk which anyone from the NGO forest movement can use to undertake advocacy towards Brussels policymakers.
