European Environmental Bureau
In 2024, the EEB will advocate for ambitious environmental policies aligned with the European Green Deal, engaging EU institutions and focusing on key legislative initiatives while enhancing governance and member involvement.
Projectdetails
Introduction
In 2024, the EEB, based on its strong push for greater ambition in the European Green Deal, will advocate for progressive environmental and climate policies. The goal is to ensure that the new European Commission’s Political Guidelines for 2024-2029 are fully aligned with the EGD objectives.
Engagement with Institutions
EEB will engage with the outgoing and incoming European Commission and Parliament, as well as the Council. In the latter case, EEB will work closely with the Belgian Council Presidency and seek constructive engagement with the Hungarian Presidency. This will involve channeling input from EEB's network of 180+ member organizations, representing 30 million individual members and supporters, into EU decision-making processes.
Focus Areas for 2024
Specific policy files that will be in focus in 2024 include:
- Nature Restoration Law
- Final stages of several circular economy instruments:
- Sustainable Product Policy Initiative
- Green Claims
- Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive
- Revisions of:
- Industrial Emissions Directive
- Priority Substances Directive
- REACH and CLP reforms
- Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive
- Ambient Air Quality Directives
- Sustainable Food Law
- Soil Monitoring Law
- Environmental Liability Directive
Organizational Development
The EEB will continue to develop its growth and consolidation plan, putting the wellbeing and training of staff at center stage.
Governance Reform
The governance reform implemented in 2023 (reformed EEB Board and Council) will be assessed and fine-tuned to ensure that the governance bodies are fit for purpose and stimulate membership engagement.
Key Focus Areas
Key focus areas include:
- Finalization of the EGD
- Mobilization around the EP elections in June (and the new Commission and Parliament)
- Preceded by the EEB’s Annual Events and celebrations of the organization’s 50th Anniversary.
