Delivering on a EU Green Deal for Transport
T&E aims to shape EU transport policy from 2022-2024 to minimize environmental harm and promote zero-emission mobility through strategic collaboration and innovative policymaking.
Projectdetails
Introduction
The overarching objective of T&E’s work is to help bring about a transport policy at EU and global level that minimises harmful impacts on the environment and on health, maximises resource efficiency, including energy and land, and guarantees safety and sufficient access for all.
Opportunity Period
The period 2022-2024 is a time of unprecedented opportunity to make progress towards these goals. The EU Green Deal is the world’s most ambitious plan to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises.
Transport as a Key Concern
Whilst transport is now the EU’s top environmental concern, it also offers a unique opportunity for rapid environmental progress. Recent technological developments mean that zero emission, circular mobility is now a realistic and achievable objective for all modes of transport, including aviation and shipping.
EU Leadership in Clean Mobility
EU action on green mobility since the 2015 “Dieselgate” scandal has placed Europe in the driver seat to lead the global clean mobility race, creating new jobs, social progress, and prosperity in Europe. Smart EU policymaking will be key to rapidly drive this transition whilst minimising negative knock-on effects, e.g. additional traffic, battery waste.
Recognition of Challenges and Opportunities
These challenges and opportunities were recognised by the EU Commission in the December 2019 Green Deal strategy, which assigned a central role to transport in the Union’s regulatory and investment strategy.
Focus Areas
We focus on those policies that have the greatest potential to reduce the environmental footprint of transport, and where we can help create the right political conditions for ambitious action. In 2022-2024 we will focus on the following 8 areas:
- Climate policy architecture
- Zero-emission and circular cars and vans
- Zero-emission freight
- Safe cities and clean air
- Clean energy
- Sustainable aviation
- Sustainable shipping
- Sustainable finance
Engagement Strategy
Our strategy is to engage in discussions conducted at EU-level to reduce negative impacts through EU action, in cooperation with our 63 members and in coalition with like-minded groups.
