Projectdetails

Introduction

This project builds on Carbon Market Watch’s unique expertise in carbon pricing and track record of policy work in international organisations and the European Union. Carbon Market Watch exists to ensure that carbon pricing and other climate policies cut pollution and drive a just transition towards zero-carbon societies. Given the urgency of halting the climate breakdown, we want market-based climate policies to fulfil their promise and be used in wise combination with regulatory and incentivising measures.

Strategic Plan

We present a 3-year strategic plan with evidence-based advocacy to improve climate policies, turning complex issues into comprehensible messages, and helping people understand and influence those policies.

Speciality and Approach

Carbon Market Watch’s speciality is the implementation of the polluter-pays principle through the analysis of carbon markets and carbon pricing policies and measures, and the interplay of such market mechanisms with other regulatory approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

We carry out this work with our members and NGOs in Europe and internationally, combining policy advocacy with a series of activities aimed at:

  • Raising awareness
  • Knowledge development
  • Compliance with EU and international law

Carbon Market Watch aims to uphold its reputation as a key NGO working on carbon markets in Europe and with longstanding presence and active participation in relevant UN processes.

Work Areas

The work areas covered by this proposal relate to climate policies of the European Union itself or to international climate policy in which the European Union is an influential player, including through the co-legislation of the “Fit for 55” 2030 climate and energy package.

The Paris Agreement’s objectives adopted at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) climate conference in 2015 provide the overall direction for the EU’s climate policy initiatives and the upcoming reviews in 2023 in line with the international process.
