Introduction

According to the latest science, despite the EU’s increased climate and energy targets, the Union is still falling short of reaching the 1.5° C objective of the Paris Agreement. However, a number of policy opportunities in the next 3 years might help the EU step up its game, if they are designed in an inclusive way and supported by a wide range of stakeholders and citizens.

Project Overview

The LIFE TogetherFor1.5 project aims to align the EU’s climate action with the 1.5°C objective of the Paris Agreement. This will be achieved by building on climate and energy policy revision opportunities, such as:

  • Fit for 55 legislative package finalisation
  • NECP and national long-term strategy revision

The project period runs from September 2022 to August 2025, with a focus on increasing public acceptance of more inclusive climate action by demonstrating its societal and economic co-benefits.

Project Development

The project is developed by 13 national CSOs and CAN Europe, the leading climate NGO coalition in Europe. It will focus on several key areas:

  1. Raising Awareness: Highlighting the co-benefits of climate action to ensure that decision-makers can make informed decisions while finalising the Fit for 55 Package.
  2. Promoting Acceptance: Ensuring that ambitious climate and energy policies are accepted by stakeholders and citizens.
  3. NECP Revision: Focusing on the revision of NECPs in 2023 – 2024 to promote ambitious targets, policies, and measures, along with well-designed public participation processes.
  4. Monitoring Implementation: Project partners will monitor the implementation of NECPs to identify policy opportunities and gaps that can be addressed in the NECP revision.
  5. Climate Target Monitoring: Finally, the project will monitor the 2040 climate target proposal and the potential revision of national long-term strategies.

Objectives

The project will achieve its objectives through the following actions:

  1. Monitoring and assessing policy files and processes.
  2. Supporting and dialoguing with decision-makers.
  3. Building capacity across CSOs and other stakeholders.
  4. Raising climate awareness across the general public.
