Projectdetails

Introduction

Stroke-caused cognitive and neuromotor impairment is currently an increasing burden. Post-stroke deficits are commonly believed to be treated with rehabilitation.

Economic Impact

Direct medical costs of stroke are estimated to increase up to 94.3 billion USD only in the US. The indirect costs, including non-healthcare costs, are estimated at 15.9 billion.

Recovery Journey

The journey towards recovery includes several stages:

  1. Hospitalization
  2. In-patient rehabilitation
  3. Out-patient rehabilitation
  4. Subsequent return to home

Not everyone has access to rehabilitation programs, and the gains from them tend to deteriorate after hospital discharge.

Importance of Focused Rehabilitation

Focused stroke rehabilitation reduces long-term disability and the economic burden of stroke. It also supports prevention by lessening modifiable risks.

Project Objective

The objective of PHRASE (Personalised Health cognitive assistance for RehAbilitation SystEm) is to create a workflow that integrates the best available scientific knowledge. This will help obtain efficient prognosis and intervention protocols for stroke and other brain-related diseases.

Potential Applications

PHRASE will not only allow for better and more efficient treatment of stroke-caused impairments but also has the potential to treat other neurological diseases such as:

  • Dementia
  • Aphasia
  • PSCI
  • Depression
  • Multiple sclerosis

Technological Foundation

Eodyne's PHRASE will be based on RGS's previous technology, developing its Technology Readiness Level.

Consortium Collaboration

The present consortium brings together a comprehensive group of highly qualified experts. To successfully produce prognosis and intervention individualized protocols:

  • EBRAINS will provide the brain database.
  • Charité will supply its brain models for data combination.
  • SPECS-Lab will contribute its knowledge in cognitive rehabilitation and act as clinical coordinator.
  • Saddlepoint Science will bring expertise to implement AI tools for continuous improvement of the intervention protocols.
