Projectdetails

Introduction

The project will address the threats of electrocution on medium-voltage lines, collisions with planned wind farms, conflicts with the recreational use of the air space, and collisions with high-voltage power lines for several breeding and migratory bird species in Slovenia. The target species include:

  • Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo)
  • Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus)
  • Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus)
  • Curlew (Numenius arquata)

Project Objectives

Insulator caps will be mounted on a total of 1150 medium-voltage poles. The electrocutions of target species will be diminished by 90% within the SPAs in the project area.

  1. New medium-voltage poles, safe for birds, will be developed.
  2. This pilot innovation and other experiences from the project will be disseminated in the Alpine and Balkan countries through a dissemination conference.
  3. Mandatory technical guidelines for the protection of birds on medium-voltage transmission lines will be adopted.

High-Voltage Power Line Protection

The most migration-sensitive part of the high-voltage power line on SPA Ljubljansko barje will be protected with markers.

Ecological Corridor Development

An ecological corridor will be established and protected, connecting the following SPAs:

  • Kras
  • Snežnik-Pivka
  • Ljubljansko barje
  • Vipavski rob
  • Banjšice
  • Breginjski stol
  • Julijci

This corridor will be designed to avoid wind turbines in the main passage areas and bottlenecks, ensuring minimal electrocution and conflicts in the air space.

The ecological corridor will be included in the management plans of Triglav National Park and Škocjan Caves Park.

Integration and Guidelines

The project results will be integrated into the existing study of sensitivity mapping and expert groundwork documentation.

Identification of possible long-range effects of energy infrastructure on project species and SPAs tackled by the project will be conducted.

  1. A handbook for the inclusion of long-range effects in EIAs will be produced.
  2. Guidelines to improve the Natura 2000 Management Plan will be developed.

Biodiversity Enhancement

A new regional/landscape park with very high biodiversity value will be established inside the corridor and SPA Snežnik-Pivka.
