Projectdetails

Introduction

Built on the LIFE project adapto implemented from 2017 to 2022 by Conservatoire du littoral (Cdl) and the French geological survey (BRGM), this LIFE project adapto+ is designed to mainstream the use of Nature-Based Solutions for climate change adaptation of coastal areas.

Project Objectives

Addressing the absence of widespread engineering and regulatory or strategic frameworks for the application of NbS for coastal management, and the persistent difficulties in understanding the concept among the target audiences, the project is subdivided into 5 work packages.

Work Packages

  1. WP1: Project Management

    • It relies on a dedicated team and the expertise of organizations that will be working collectively within a consortium headed by the Conservatoire du littoral.
  2. WP2: Development of Engineering Tools

    • Based on the development of a reproducible global method including a comprehensive engineering tool, which will be improved through its iterative implementation on 15 pilot sites.
  3. WP3: Pilot Implementation

    • The engineering tool will be tested and refined through practical applications at the pilot sites.
  4. WP4: Knowledge Sharing

    • The project intends to share knowledge, experiences, and tools with civil society and practitioners of coastal management and planning within demonstrative territories, and outside, towards several EU partners and fellows.
  5. WP5: Capacity Building and Advocacy

    • A strategic scheme providing for capacity-building of current and future coastal planners, a technical and financial recognition tool designed to involve new territories, dedicated technical assistance, and an advocacy campaign aiming to include smooth coastal area management in French and European public policies will encourage the scaling-up of the approach beyond the project itself.

Consortium Partners

The project will involve collaboration with various organizations, including:

  • BRGM
  • Centre for Studies on Risks, the Environment, Mobility and Urban Planning (CEREMA)
  • National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAe)
  • Research Institute for the Conservation of Mediterranean Wetlands (Tour du Valat)
  • French Association for Natural Reserves (RNF)
  • National Agency of Forests (ONF)
  • French Biodiversity Agency (OFB)
  • Two local partners (SyMEL, CdCN)
