Projectdetails

Introduction

The main goal of LIFE URCA PROEMYS is to improve the conservation status of Emys orbicularis in Italy and Slovenia, while maintaining the genetic diversity of the existing populations.

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives are:

  1. Develop an Integrated Management Plan for the protection of Italian and Slovenian populations of Emys turtles, including veterinary protocols. Implementation of this task will be devised in compliance with the EU Regulation 1143/2014, the Italian Decree 230/2017, and the guidelines of the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Italian Institute for Research and Protection of the Environment (ISPRA) and the Societas Herpetologica Italica (SHI). It will be adopted in all the Natura 2000 sites involved in the project. In Slovenia, the Integrated Management Plan will be developed in collaboration with the Herpetological Society of Slovenia (SHS), the Centre for Cartography of Fauna and Flora (CKFF), and the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation.

  2. Promote a cross-border management model for Emys orbicularis based on the Integrated Management Plan developed in the project.

  3. Improve the conditions of the natural habitats of Emys orbicularis in at least 29 selected sites.

  4. Restore 7 rescue and breeding centres for Emys orbicularis.

  5. Restock Emys orbicularis in at least 13 selected areas.

  6. Reduce (≥ 80% population size) or eradicate invasive turtles in at least 39 Italian and 3 Slovenian sites and enhance a network of facilities for invasive turtles in Italy.

  7. Establish a long-term monitoring plan for Emys orbicularis populations.

  8. Evaluate the implementation of the Integrated Management Plan at a regional scale in a pilot region.

  9. Raise public awareness on the conservation of Emys orbicularis and on the threat posed by the release of invasive species in natural habitats.
