Projectdetails

Introduction

Food processing industries generate large quantities of organic waste, and treatment to avoid environmental threats requires much energy and emits GHG emissions. This is particularly the case of the olive oil production industry, an essential sector in Southern Europe. Excessive amounts of olive pomace are generated, causing not only production disruptions but also environmental and social problems in the areas. The olive industry also lacks sufficient waste management capacity, forcing them to shut down occasionally.

Project Overview

Dapibus, a Spanish Biotech SME, LIVIN Farms, an Austrian H2020 awardee on novel insect farming, and INEDIT, a Spanish strategic eco-innovation studio, will develop a circular economy solution to this problem by recycling olive pomace and other organic waste into value-added products using insect farming.

Pilot Plant Development

The OLIFECycle project will build and operate the first industrial size pilot plant able to treat olive pomace by using insect farming, capable of turning 10,000 tn/year of waste into:

  1. Alternative insect proteins for the pet food and aquaculture industries
  2. Organic fertilizer

All products will be sustainable, produced by growing Black Soldier Flies.

Market Engagement

The consortium has already signed contracts with large corporations for the sale of these products in this pilot plant and future industrial sites. The solution will be upscaled after project completion to process up to 100,000 tn/year of input ready by 2027, then replicated in five additional plants by 2035.

Expected Impact

OLIFECycle will have a significant impact by enabling the valorization of thousand tonnes of organic waste per year. It aims to:

  • Reduce GHG emissions by 61%
  • Decrease energy consumption by over 52%
  • Lower water consumption by over 62% compared to current processes

This initiative will improve the quality of life for citizens, providing an environmentally friendly and economically sustainable alternative to process olive pomace, while also protecting this industry and creating new added-value market opportunities.
