Projectdetails

Introduction

The peat bog Hohlohmoor, situated in the Special Area of Conservation „Kaltenbronner Enzhöhen“ in Baden-Württemberg, suffers from drainage-induced degradation and needs to be restored. It is part of the largest raised bog complex in the Black Forest, which is unparalleled in terms of size and quality of the European continental uplands.

Objectives of Revitalisation

The revitalisation is expected to improve the conservation status of the protected habitat types *91D0 and *7110. This will:

  • Strengthen climate change resilience
  • Safeguard ecosystem functions
  • Ensure preservation of the peat body
  • Improve and conserve habitats of endangered species
  • Enhance water retention
  • Support human recreation in the long run

Methodology

The revitalisation is achieved through effective water retention of precipitation water by closing off 35 km of drainage structures on the 68 ha of sloping hillside by installing 1,375 water barriers. The resulting rise of water levels enables:

  1. Enlarged bog ponds
  2. Distribution of seepage water
  3. Rewetting of the raised bog and peat depressions

The design of measures is based on preliminary studies on the raised bog. The sequencing, size, and construction of the barriers were systematically derived from topography as well as the size of the drainage system.

Public Engagement

Through professional public relation work, our goals, measures, and results will be conveyed to the public. Cooperation with the local info center will support the anticipated interregional high demand for information from tourists and experts. The already implemented information exchange of international experts in peatland protection ensures the transfer of the experience gained.

Framework Conditions

The framework conditions (e.g. land access, high annual rain precipitation, no irreversible damage to the bog, experience in project management) indicate high prospects of success regarding the goal of revitalisation.

Future Applications

The results will be applicable to other peat bogs of similar formation. A second bog nearby, the Wildseemoor, is to be revitalized at a later date.
