Improving degree of conservation of Natura 2000 target species and habitat types through improvement of river connectivity
The project aims to save the endangered Softmouth trout in Croatia by enhancing river connectivity and habitat conditions through collaboration with key conservation and water management partners.
Projectdetails
Introduction
With this rather ambitious project, we are aiming to save from the brink of extinction the species Salmothymus obtusirostris (Softmouth trout), an endangered and endemic species present in the EU exclusively in Croatia.
Project Objectives
To achieve this objective, we intend to make key improvements in the condition of specific habitat features, primarily by ensuring river connectivity in Natura 2000 sites by removing artificial barriers in the area of species distribution. This will be combined with other conservation measures that address the ecological requirements of the species.
Importance of Habitat Improvement
Improvement of habitat conditions is crucial for enhancing the degree of conservation of the species on 2 selected Natura 2000 sites. Additionally, it aims to improve the species' conservation status on a biogeographical level in the future.
Collaboration and Partnerships
The success of the project is guaranteed through close collaboration with carefully selected project partners:
- Hrvatske vode (Croatian waters - CW): The competent authority for public water management and implementing the Water Framework Directive in Croatia.
- Faculty of Science (FoS): Experts focusing on satisfying the conservation needs of the species as well as hydromorphological aspects of habitat improvements.
- Public Institution "Sea and Karst" (PI -SK): Responsible for the management of the 2 Natura 2000 sites, which will continue with identified management activities after the project ends, but from a much more favorable position to fulfill the ecological requirements of S. obtusirostris and improve its conservation.
Future Implications
The project will improve cooperation between nature conservation and water management sectors, ensuring better management of species and habitats in the future. This will provide a foundation for significant improvement of river connectivity on a national level until 2030.
