Projectdetails

Project Overview

The project aims to use established demonstrative sustainable farming and mobile grazing unit initiatives for the maintenance of favourable conservation status of the concrete populations of Corncrake*, Great Snipe*, Black-tailed Godwit*, Common Redshank*, and other species and habitats of EU importance in wet grasslands and mires in six SPAs. Additionally, the project will widely promote its achievements in the country and beyond.

Population Goals

Due to the project, the local populations of the threatened grassland wader* species and Corncrake* will increase by at least 100% in each of the 6 SPAs. This will reach significant percentage levels of their national populations, specifically:

  1. At least 3% for Corncrake*
  2. 25% for Black-tailed Godwit*
  3. 6% for Common Redshank*
  4. 10% for Ruff
  5. 25% for Great Snipe*

Sustainable and nature- and climate-friendly farming practices will be promoted among all relevant stakeholder groups in the country, aiming for significant replication responses in 40 farms. This includes the endorsement of the most important strategic planning documents and national legislation for grassland species conservation.

Habitat Restoration

Wet meadows and mire habitats will be restored in 460 ha of agricultural land by:

  • Regulating the hydrological regime (280 ha)
  • Exterminating overgrown vegetation (310 ha)

To maintain these habitats and others, two demonstrative cattle breeding farms and a mobile grazing initiative will be established over 640 ha. The farms will demonstrate that by applying different kinds of climate-friendly farming schemes for maintaining habitats, the economic sustainability of extensive cattle farms can be ensured. The mobile grazing initiative will allow farmers to test how extensive habitat grazing fits their land.

Sustainability and Replication

To ensure replication and sustainability of the results, the following will be endorsed:

  1. 3 site management plans
  2. 2 species action plans
  3. A habitats sustainability model developed
  4. Increased capacities of stakeholders
  5. Improvements of RDP advocated

The project aims to reach 270,000 persons through dissemination efforts.
