Surfrider Foundation Europe for the preservation of the ocean

Introduction

Surfrider Foundation Europe (SFE) is a non-profit organisation (NGO) dedicated to the conservation of Europe’s ocean, seas, beaches, lakes, rivers and coastlines. The proposal will contribute to achieve the following objectives:

Objective 1: Reducing Marine Litter

• Contribute to reduce marine litter by 50% by 2030, in particular through the following specific objectives (SO):
  • Enhance the collected data to strengthen SFE's expertise work.
  • Involve and mobilise our community and citizens in the fight against marine litter.
  • Contribute to the implementation of ambitious regulations and directives to reduce the production and consumption of macro and micro plastics.

Objective 2: Protecting Water Quality

• Contribute to protecting our seas and water bodies and the health and well-being of EU citizens by enhancing water quality in Europe:
  • Deploy our pollution monitoring protocols and strengthen the capacity of our network at the European level to consolidate SFE’s expertise and influence.
  • Help improve Water Quality regulations in Europe.

Objective 3: Achieving a Climate-Neutral Society

• Contribute to achieve a climate-neutral society by 2050 and limit climate change impacts on EU citizens through the creation of a risk management culture in the EU:
  • Work on the intrinsic links between ocean and climate and raise awareness on the topic.
  • Foster the implementation of coastal or offshore development activities respectful of the marine space.

Action Plan

To achieve these objectives, SFE will implement 4 complementary and intertwined levers of actions:

1. Development of its scientific expertise on ocean threats.
2. Awareness raising campaigns.
3. Advocacy strategies.
4. Citizen empowerment through mobilisation.
