Projectdetails

Introduction

SAFE, as the only non-profit organisation solely focusing on consumers' protection in the agri-food sector, is a unique player at the European level. Our sole focus and mission are to improve consumers' protection in the EU food system, by supporting the development of policies and information actions that jointly address health, environment, food safety, and sustainability.

Workplan Overview

In this 3-year workplan (2022-2024) for the LIFE Operating Grant for non-profit entities, SAFE will focus its action on three main stages of the food chain through 3 work packages addressing: food production (especially agricultural production); food packaging at the retail and processing stages; and food consumption. Therefore, our workplan will focus on the following policy areas:

Food Packaging

SAFE will advocate for safe food packaging for people and the environment through advocacy to policy-makers and awareness-raising campaigns for consumers. In our strategy, we will:

  • Assess the environmental impact of food contact materials (FCMs).
  • Promote food packaging alternatives that will reduce the environmental impact of packaging without endangering people's health.

Sustainable and Healthy Food Consumption Behaviours

SAFE will lead awareness-raising campaigns and research to improve consumers' food consumption patterns regarding their environmental and climate impact.

Sustainable Agriculture

In order to promote systems of cultivation excluding artificial chemicals, widespread use of animals, and genetically modified materials to increase soil fertility and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in farming, SAFE will:

  1. Develop awareness-raising campaigns for consumers through national organizations.
  2. Lead continuous advocacy campaigns to foster support for more sustainable forms of agriculture in EU policies.
  3. Complement this work with knowledge-dissemination campaigns for centres of vocational training and universities teaching agriculture.
