Introduction
WENexus - Delivering the water-energy nexus for energy efficiency is a project designed to tackle challenges faced in the water services sector, namely regarding its current energy inefficiency and the lack of energy innovation in water utilities infrastructure.
Project Goals
The main goal of WENexus is to develop, deploy, and standardise a set of innovative tools regarding financing engineering and investment mobilisation. These new tools should leverage a set of energy efficiency and renewable energy investments in water infrastructures, guaranteeing a high degree of replicability and transferability potential within the sector.
Alignment with National Plans
WENexus is aligned with the goals of national plans and strategies such as:
- The Plan for Energy and Climate 2030
- The Portuguese Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality
- The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations (the Sustainable Development Goals)
Specific Objectives
In order to reach the goals mentioned above, WENexus defined the following set of specific objectives:
- To mobilise private investment towards water infrastructure renovation with the development of innovative financial models for energy efficiency investment in water services infrastructures.
- To work towards de-risking energy efficiency projects in water infrastructures.
- To enhance the project dissemination, replicability, and transferability at national and international levels, empowering the sustainable exploitation of its results.
