Projectdetails

Introduction

Over 3M new cases of skin cancer occur annually, with 85% related to sun exposure, hence widely preventable. Sunscreens are key players for skin cancer prevention, protecting us from the UVR due to their active ingredients: UV filters.

Limitations of Existing Filters

Regrettably, existing filters have several limitations:

  1. Fast degradation
  2. Toxic to humans and the sea environment
  3. Limited exposure time
  4. Require a combination of multiple filters for full UV spectrum protection

SMART UV Development

Roka Furadada has developed and patented SMART UV, overcoming all those limitations. SMART UV is:

  • Non-toxic
  • Long-lasting
  • UVR-dose dependent
  • Eco-sustainable (using lignin as raw material) promoting a circular economy

Goals and Market Strategy

Our goal is to make SMART UV the first choice for sunscreen manufacturers and users who wish to protect their skin without harming the environment.

Support from EIC Acc

The EIC Acc will help bring SMART UV to market by:

  • Optimizing scalability
  • Ensuring sustainable synthesis
  • Completing lab tests
  • Obtaining cosmetic ingredient certifications

Financial Projections

Roka expects to breakeven by 2024 with sales of €4M.
